CONTEMPORARY STYLE. Interior design

The contemporary style in interior design, technically, is the one that is based on the moment that is being lived, in the here and now, but… how does one manage to identify the present? Sometimes it is less easy than it seems. In general terms, it represents a 180º turn to the dictates of traditional decoration. This translates into a preference for soft outlines rather than ornate, solid fabrics or very subtle patterns rather than colorful designs, and one-off accessories rather than large collections of miscellaneous items. Contemporary design features cutting-edge materials, glass, and metals.

Matching white walls and furniture are a strong point to achieve contemporary style in your interior design, but natural elements such as fir, cedar, stone and even cork can also be incorporated. Sustainability is huge for contemporary design. The overall visual appearance is unified yet comfortable and elegant.

The contemporary style consists of creating an environment of comfort and simplicity; clear, fresh and subtly sophisticated. Show off the beauty of space, clean lines and uncomplicated clarity. It’s a stunning style, neutral, grey, black and white color schemes (often accented with bold colors) reign supreme, as does the use of clean lines and geometric shapes. The philosophy less is more is applied.

To achieve contemporary style in your interior design, place furniture in straight and pure lines, clear finishes, glass, nickel, stainless steel or chrome are present in contemporary style furniture. The textiles are natural fabrics, silk, cotton, linen in neutral colors, sometimes with a specific color to add a touch.

For the walls you should always use paint in neutral tones, as with the textile you can give it a specific touch with a more powerful color or a special finish. Wallpaper can also work well, as long as it is very subtle. For the floor use wood, stone cement or a laminate, to give it warmth use rugs with a simple design that is not excessively flashy.

Lighting is very important to achieve a contemporary style interior design. Tracks and recessed lighting help to leave a clean wall, indirect light is also important. Includes color and metallic elements. Use points of light to illuminate your paintings, so you will be able to attract attention to them. Contemporary style sculptures can be placed at eye level by placing them on a column or pedestal.

The frames in high gloss, matt black, natural wood or metal finishes are ideal for prints and paintings. If you are going to put several pieces together, hang them together so they create the feeling of one big piece. Do not load contemporary style spaces with too many pieces of furniture and accessories. In contemporary interiors, open space is just as important as what you’re going to put inside. Plants and flowers should be large and placed in containers with simple lines. Large flowers with leaves fit better than small arrangements. If space allows, place lights focused upwards around a large plant, add stones or pieces of bark.

All the details count, keep the tableware contemporary. You can find them in geometric shapes and wonderful designs. Nor can we forget the texture for cutlery, napkins, placemats and centerpieces.
